A discussion on the role of LGBTIQ+ communities, civil society, and cities in safeguarding democracy, human rights, and the freedom of assembly, particularly in the context of contemporary challenges and pressures faced by LGBTIQ+ communities across Europe.

You are warmly invited to a pre-festival panel titled “Democracy Defenders – LGBTIQ+ Movements”. The panel explores the role of LGBTIQ+ and other social movements in building and sustaining democracy, with a focus on the connection between activism, historical struggles, and contemporary challenges. Special attention is given to how young people – especially LGBTIQ+ youth – can actively participate in democratic life today.

A 30-minute documentary filmed at Ljubljana Pride Festival 2025 uses a mosaic of interwoven interviews to explore LGBTIQ+ community, identity, and activism. The conference creates space for dialogue about experiences of activism and work within the NGO sector on the Western Balkans, as well as the achievements and challenges of the shared struggle for LGBTIQ+ rights. Through discussion, we will highlight progress, key obstacles and opportunities for further community action, while strengthening connections for future regional collaboration.

The panel will bring together representatives and organizers of Pride marches from across the Western Balkans as part of the conference Western Balkans are queer, which will take place before the opening of the exhibition “A Parade Throughout the Balkans”.. The discussion explores how Pride marches contribute to the development of democracy in local contexts and reflects on the current state of the struggle for LGBTIQ+ rights across the region.

As Smut Slam is being presented in Slovenia for the first time, a workshop led by its creator Cameryn Moore will also take place. Participants will be introduced to the Smut Slam technique and develop their own stories on themes of sexuality, hope and Pride in preparation for the evening event.
Connecting Queer and Climate Justice

This panel explores how climate impacts deepen existing inequalities and disproportionately affect LGBTIQ+ communities. The speakers will share strategies for queering climate justice, and building cross-movement and intersectional alliances across divides, especially in the face of shrinking civic space and rising homophobia. Lastly, the panel also reflects on how these solidarities can expand civic space and help redefine democracy.

- 18.00–20.00 at Metelkova (the gathering and the parade)
- 20.00–23.00 at Kongresni trg (during the programme)
You will recognize them by their white T-shirts with the inscription “VARNA OSEBA”.
