Molalatladi wa Bonke: A Rainbow for all of us

07 June 2026 19:30 - 20:30

Join us for an hour to explore connections from artists and activists travelling from Slovenia to South Africa to Slovenia. Throughout the documentary “Molalatladi wa Bonke” we will follow South African human rights activists and archivist, Bonke Sonjani (he/they) from their home in South Africa to attend Ljubljana Pride week 2025. Through Bonke’s journey, filmmaker Theto Maleka shows us a sensory, mosaic-style documentary connecting global voices across 21 countries, following the cultural bridge between South Africa and Slovenia during Ljubljana Pride 2025 to prove that joy is the ultimate blueprint for transnational policy.
The documentary will be accompanied by an artist talk with Theto and Bonke, as well as an exhibition from Slovene photographer and cultural worker, Katja Goljat, who was key in initiating the partnership between Ljubljana Pride and South African LGBTIQ+ activists.

In just 30 minutes, the documentary delves into:

  • Combating hate speech through visibility and storytelling.
  • The politics of joy as a force for policy change.
  • The future of international queer collaboration and mutual support.

It serves as a vivid portrait of how personal courage translates into policy ambition, Molalatladi wa Bonke invites viewers to witness, reflect, and imagine a more interconnected, inclusive future for LGBTQI+ activism worldwide.

Bio of Filmmaker: Theto Maleka is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in the spirit of vulnerability and local community, and, whose journey has taken her from the townships of Tubatse, Limpopo, RSA to the creative hubs off Southeast Asia and Ljubljana, Slovenia. Her directorial work on Molalatladi wa Bonke: A Rainbow for all of us showcases her unique ability to weave personal narratives into a “living mosaic” of activism and queer joy. Through her latest partnership with Bonke Sonjani and Ljubljana Pride, she aims to inspire a new generation of creators to use their talents as a tool for international connection and social change.

Impressions from a trip to South Africa, 2025 Do you know the feeling of carrying a country within you for a long time? And then one day, you finally step into it. Things begin to unfold – about yourself, about others, and about life in general.
Recently, I heard that travel is a cultivation of the spirit. Maybe it truly is. For me, it’s the people who have stayed closest to my heart. Let me share a part of my South African story – portraits and spaces from a spontaneous solo journey through Johannesburg and Cape Town, and a little beyond.

Katja Goljat (1982) is a self-employed cultural worker, a photographer based in Ljubljana, working in the field of contemporary auteur and documentary photography. In her work she presents themes that excite her and reveal a glimpse of her own intimate world, or take her to
worlds beyond, where there are stories of people whose lifestyles are the result of social
transformations and tend to break away from the grip of cultural forms She treats the camera as a magical machine that translates her insights and feelings into images.prevaja v podobe.
