Based on the book of the same name by Maja Bekčić Petrović and dramatised by Divna Stojanov, the theatre play “Major and Helena” reveals the moving and true story of Helena Vuković, a former major in the Serbian army who is also a trans woman. Directed by Aleks Jovčić, this play offers an in-depth insight into Helena’s life and her personal journey through injustice, pain and joy.
The story focuses on the conflict between the patriarchal and conservative environment represented by the military and the liberal environment of the LGBTIQ+ community. Through this contrast, the complexity of Helena’s life is revealed, as well as the beauty and challenges of trans/queer life in Serbia. Important themes such as difference, courage and honesty are central to the performance, highlighting the necessity of authenticity and honesty in a society that often rejects those who do not fit into established norms. “Major and Helena” encourages us to reflect on how much courage it takes to be who we are in a conservative society. At the same time, it also offers a message of comfort and support to those who feel lonely or rejected for being different.
