At the exhibition opening, we will get the chance to explore its meaning and meet the artists themselves: Christa Barlinn Korvald, Marin Håskjold and IO Siversten, established Norwegian LGBTIQ+ artists, who have been working on the exhibition over a span of several years, collecting the voices and stories of LGBTIQ+ people from different countries, including Slovenia. The project tackles relevant societal and political topics related to the safety and freedom of the LGBTIQ+ community.

The exhibition will be on dislpay form June 6th to July 7th.

We invite you to a guided tour of the “Kiss it Better” exhibition with the curator Ivan Kovač who will be joined by one of the featured artists.

The DIY Queer Feminist Cabaret explores themes related to gender and/or sexual orientation that are ignored, covered up and repressed in everyday society. It creates a space where performers do not have to adapt performances and themes that might not be appropriate on a traditional stage, a space where the “ugly” becomes beautiful, the non-normative is desirable, the “unattractive” is attractive …

This relaxed rainbow brunch gathering is intended for getting to know each other, making connections and strengthening the LGBTIQ+ community. Together we will celebrate our participation at the European elections.

The workshop introduces “The Zone of Fabulousness”, a methodology developed by Vikki Reynolds and Tara Taylor for social justice activists. It serves as an approach that fosters connection, centers on the individuals we serve, and aligns our shared ethics with collective care, rather than capitalist notions of self-care.

At the international conference, we will delve into the consequences of LGBTIQ+ youth homelessness invisibility. With experts from Slovenia and abroad, we will examine how these challenges impact youth and housing policies, as well as the accessibility and adequacy of public services, particularly for those facing homelessness.

At the systemic level, LGBTIQ+ people repeatedly experience discrimination and exclusion, while our countries are bound to uphold the right to non-discrimination and equal treatment for all. Should we fight with the system, or against the system, by always demanding equal and non-discriminatory treatment and inclusion?

The international seminar will introduce the human rights situation of LGBTIQ+ asylum seekers in Slovenia and allow for a comparison with other European countries. Based on the book of the same name by Maja Bekčić Petrović and dramatised by Divna Stojanov, the theatre play “Major and Helena” reveals the moving and true story of Helena Vuković, a former major in the Serbian army who is also a trans woman.

Dorijan Mavrični, Glupa Pupa Kunt and Saška Depresso are local drag performers who, throughout their work on the scene, actively place trans identities in stories told through drag. With their talent and fearlessness, they will ensure an unforgettable end to the evening.

Like every year, Pride Village will be dedicated to everyone in our community. The largest community event of the year is designed as a warm-up for the Pride Parade and the stage programme after the march.

The main event of the annual Pride Parade in Ljubljana is the Pride March – a protest march through the streets of Ljubljana, this year under the slogan “Looking Back, Marching Forward”.

Join us for the unforgettable conclusion of this year’s Ljubljana Pride Festival at the spectacular Pride Afterparty at Metelkova, organised for the very first time in collaboration with clubs Tiffany and Monokel, the Ustanova collective, as well as clubs Gala hala and Gromka!

The year 2024 marks 40 years of the organized LGBTIQ+ community in Slovenia, 40 years of fighting for human rights, visibility and dignity of LGBTIQ+ people, and 40 years of slow but persistent achievements. When we look back at the past 40 years and evaluate the situation today, we see that the fight for the human rights of LGBTIQ+ people in Slovenia is far from over.

Lesbian couples and single women are discriminated against as they still do not have access to medically assisted pregnancies.

Intersex babies and children are subjected to medically non-urgent cosmetic surgeries that aim to “correct” their genitalia, thereby marking them for life.

LGBTIQ+ people seeking international protection (asylum) experience violence and secondary victimization in asylum centers and institutional treatment, as they end up in a closed institution together with people from the environments they fled from, as well as homo- and transphobia and racism.

LGBTIQ+ people who find themselves in institutional care also often experience violence and discrimination. Their basic human rights remain unaddressed. Safe houses do not offer protection to transgender people, transgender women end up in prisons in men’s wards, LGBTIQ+ people in psychiatric care experience violence and conversion therapy approaches, LGBTIQ+ children in schools do not have adequate access to toilets and changing rooms, they experience bullying and other pressures on a daily basis …

Thus, with this year’s Ljubljana Pride Festival, we are answering to all those who doubt the need for a pride parade, for activism and for the constant fight for human rights and dignity. All the horrible backlash and hatred that has poured in towards non-binary people after Nemo’s victory at this year’s Eurovision is, among other things, the reason that it is necessary to keep fighting. Every young LGBTIQ+ person who experiences bullying at school or is afraid to come out to friends and parents is why we need activism. And every renewed attempt by hostile or indifferent politics to keep LGBTIQ+ people invisible and hated, to continue to violate our rights and to label our needs as politically too risky to be addressed through public policy, is a reason for the pride parade.

On the 40th anniversary of the organized LGBTIQ+ community in Slovenia, we are embarking on a journey through time. Throughout the year, we celebrate the pioneering steps and achievements of the past 40 years. During the Ljubljana Pride Festival, we shed light on today’s struggles and march towards a better and a more just future. History teaches us that change is possible, even if it seems impossible at a given moment. Together we will dream of tomorrow’s utopias and build joint visions for the future. Join us on this journey.

History teaches us, the future calls us, and the present is our battlefield.
